FAIR WARNING (mostly for my mother): THERE IS A PICTURE OF A PUFFY HAND AND THE MENTION OF THE WORD “VEIN” IN THIS POST. NO GRAPHIC CONTENT, I PROMISE. 🙂
There’s nothing like sitting in a room full of your older coworkers (most around 50) and admitting that the brace on your arm is because at 24, you’ve managed to get Carpal Tunnel. The youngest in the office and officially the first to get CTS – and I’ve only been a software engineer for two years. Can’t wait to see how the rest of my career goes!
It actually started a couple of nights ago. I had a sharp pain in the palm of my right hand and my thumb was pretty inflamed – I actually thought I might just have an irritated cuticle thanks to trips to the nail salon. The next day, the pain only got worse. At that point, my pointer finger was hurting also and I noticed the main vein in the palm of my hand was swollen and felt like it was being pinched. It got to the point where I considered actually going to the ER because we were worried we might be ignoring a blood clot. Seriously, those things terrify me. And aneurysms. Word of advice: don’t Google “swollen vein in palm” at 11pm after a margarita – you will go into panic mode.
Yesterday morning, I went straight to the doctor. I was having a full-blown attack of some sort. My whole hand ached and a sharp pain was shooting up towards my elbow. The Mister even pointed out the swelling on the top of my hand going down towards my wrist. You can even see how my thumb, pointer, and middle fingers were all a little puffy and discolored compared to my ring finger and pinky.
It was crazy how fast it came on. Luckily, the doctor took one look at it (well, to give her more credit, she poked and prodded thoroughly and asked a million questions during this “one look”) and knew immediately what it was. Yup. Now I get to rock this awesome brace though right?
And to anyone that’s aware that I had “trigger finger” as a toddler, no these are actually not related. I Googled that too. 🙂 But apparently I just have stupid hands susceptible to a wide range of unrelated stupid problems. Sigh…
