It’s been a couple of weeks and we’re certainly well overdue for an update on how the move went. I’ll try and keep it less text-heavy for you since I know 90% of the moving process is super boring to talk about.
We’d picked a date for our move and set up two Facebook “Help Us Move” Events – one in Baltimore and one in Charlottesville. We reserved the U-Haul and had boxed up 75% of our crap… or so we thought. The week preceding our move was poorly planned. We DRASTICALLY underestimated the amount of stuff we’d collected in our 3 years living in Baltimore. We’d done a terrible job when we moved in together of dealing with things and tended to revert to the “Oh that? …. Um… let’s just put it in the basement for now.” So we ended up spending the week following the move throwing a ton of stuff away (or donating).
Then we found out that even if you reserve a truck for a certain time, you’re not guaranteed it. And our 9am reservation had been bumped to noon which threw off our whole schedule for the day. So the morning of the move, The Mister made some frantic phone calls to the national, regional, and local U-Haul offices and managed to bump our reservation up to 10am.
We made it to Springfield where we picked up the Mister’s best friend. This man. Words cannot describe how appreciative we are of his help. While in Springfield, we picked up the brand new oven Mister’s parents bought us as a Christmas present and snarfed down some food before hitting the road again. And the rest of my night looked a lot like this.
As soon as we made it to Charlottesville, we encountered “a squall.” Think micro-burst storm… with snow. It was the craziest thing I’ve ever experienced and thankfully only lasted about 20 minutes. But just long enough to coat all of our belongings from the truck into the house with about 1/4″ of snow.
A couple of hours later and a midnight run to Cook Out for some BBQ and milkshakes, we were finally in our new house. And have spent the past 3 weeks recovering and unpacking. Yesterday, I cashed in on a spa day that The Mister got me for Christmas and the masseuse said that my back was so knotted and tense, she was concerned I might have had a previous spinal injury. Consider this my doctor’s note for my absence from the blog. 🙂
