So it’s been awhile since I’ve blogged and I’m here to offer you a long list of excuses. Which is actually a rundown of what the heck we’ve been up to over the past month. So here’s the Reader’s Digest version…
That Snow Though
It’s been a crazy couple of months here in Charlottesville. When we first moved in, and up until only about a month ago, we were hit with a pretty regular weekly snow storm. And while I rejoiced in the opportunity to run outside and make snow angels in our BACKYARD – ya know… because we have one of those now – we also have to deal with a few new things as homeowners. Like the Charlottesville City Ordinance requiring all residents to shovel their sidewalks within 48 hours of snowfall. 48 hours seems like a long enough time if it didn’t take about 47 hours to work up the courage to bundle up and tackle it.
Also. Snow is heavy. And since I was unemployed at the time and attempting not to give The Mister a honeydo list whilst I’m at home in my PJs “looking for work”, I tried to tackle most of the shoveling myself. That lasted through the first storm and I threw my back out. I know. I know. Lift from the knees. But have you SEEN these weak-ass knobbly things holding my legs together? Laying down on a heating pad became pretty routine there for awhile.
Auf Wiedersehen, Unemployment
I got a job. And as everyone knows, those first few months on a new job are full of “I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I’M DOING” and “Maybe I should stay late so it looks like I’m actually doing work but really I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I’M DOING.” Regardless it’s nice to be gainfully employed, but I did lose my all-day-long ability to blog which I neglected to take advantage of. With an office full of 2010 grads and a 5 minute walking commute, I’m happy as a clam though. And since The Mister now works from home, we certainly get to spend a lot more time together. Quite a stark difference from my 45 minute commute and him often having to work until the wee hours of the night. It’s nice to actually go on a date every now and then.
April. April was just…. about the craziest month of my life. The Mister turned the big 2-5
Happy Birthday, old fart. And in celebration, I bought him one of these bad boys. Because what man doesn’t love the capability of saying “let’s roast a whole pig in the backyard”? And that’s exactly what we said.
This past weekend were the annual Foxfield races in Charlottesville and since a lot of our friends come back to town for them – not for the races, but for the massive party that it becomes – we figured we’d throw a little pig roast in the backyard the night before. Because parties before parties is how we roll. Turns out, people really love the opportunity to eat like savages in a backyard during a thunderstorm. Our friends are quite literally the best, but we were ill-prepared for the masses that would come to welcome us into our new home. Next year we’ll have our shiz together.
Now don’t get me wrong – there’s not much I love more than spending a night with my closest friends and waking up to the hilarity of finding a pig skull being licked by the neighbor’s cat, a sweet potato on my coffee table (although that one was explained later) and a couple full bottles of wine in my backyard. I’m pretty sure we are the inspiration behind Katy Perry’s song. I really wish I’d taken a picture.
But April wasn’t all Pig Roast prep. It was full of ups and downs. There were multiple concerts, weekend visits from friends and family, attempting to learn how to mow our lawn, the basil chopping disaster that landed The Mister in the hospital for a couple of hours and walking out with 2 stitches in his index finger (that was really the only “down”, but it was a doozy), and so on.
You’ve probably seen the news on Instagram and Facebook, but if you missed it, I’M GOING TO BE AN AUNT!!!
In t-minus 4 months, little Baby Bond will be gracing us with his epic presence and I am totally ecstatic to spoil the kid rotten. That also means I have 4 months to finish that quilt I started 2 months ago and seeing as we’re coming up on 3 weddings to attend, 4th of July, and my birthday weekend… my spare weekends are slowly being consumed.
So there you have it, folks. A long list of excuses. But now that the big Pig Roast is out of the way and I have a sudden sense of calm as I settle into the routine of a full-time job, I’m ready to get back into the groove of blogging in my spare time. My sincere apologies for leaving you in suspense for so long wondering what we’ve been up to.
