How NOT to Install a Motion Sensor Light
So like I’ve said numerous times before – we have no idea what we’re doing half the time when it comes to projects around the house. After my roommate’s car was broken into, it was a no brainer that we needed to add some security to the back patio/driveway area. We almost never turn the back light on unless we’re taking the garbage out to the end of the alley, so it was a crime spot waiting to happen. I ran to Home Depot and snagged a not-too-expensive (around $40) motion sensor light. I didn’t want a flood light because the area is small and I certainly didn’t want a bright light beaming into our neighbors windows every time one of us pulled into the driveway at night. So I went … Continue reading »
Home Is Where The Heart Is
This past weekend, I set the cat food feeder timer, packed the car to the gills, and hit the road for a weekend at my parents’ house. It’s a weird thing to start to have to say. Sometimes I say “home home” as if saying it twice registers in people’s minds that I’m referring to Fredericksburg. But fighting off the weekend beach traffic, I managed to trudge my way back to my hometown for a little much-needed R&R. And of course the camera made the journey with me to snap shots of my incredibly beautiful family – pets included. And despite the few weeks of out-of-season scorching weather which was MY personal excuse for having killed EVERY SINGLE PLANT on our roof deck (seriously, I killed a cactus… I didn’t even … Continue reading »
Black and Yellow
What a weekend! I’m sorry I haven’t posted sooner to tell you all about it. Basically, I took the day off work (the Summer Solstice is a commonly observed holiday – no? hrmm) and flew to Boston last Friday morning to visit an old college friend who’s parents were having a big summer party. Arriving in Boston, to my pleasant surprise, I realized I’d left my Canon Rebel XT in my purse from the night before. … Continue reading »
When it rains, it pours
And sometimes the old man isn’t snoring…. sometimes the roof leaks instead. Last night after a freak thunderstorm (where I’m from, the weathermen like to call these “microbursts” as if that somehow makes up for the fact that they said it would be 85 and sunny with a 0% chance of rain) I went upstairs to take a shower. Upon walking into my bathroom, I noticed the bath mat was damp and the sink counter was covered in water. Even the underside of my glass shelf was wet, so I knew it had splashed. Looking up, I quickly discovered the source was the exhaust fan in the ceiling. Having since called the landlord to report the issue – because I’m beyond the point of pointing to the ceiling, yelling … Continue reading »
Photographer in the making
Photography has been a longtime passion of mine. As is explained on my Photography page (click that link up there if you have no idea what I’m talking about ^) , I’m a novice. It’s a passion I never give much time to. Inspired by the work of fellow novice photographer/home decor blogger Katie Bower, I decided to dust off the ol’ DSLR – oh yeah…. I literally mean DUST – and get back at it. I even went so far as to snag a new lens for this baby. I tend to lean towards portrait photography and no I don’t mean the posed cheesy ones we all took for yearbooks back in high school. So, I decided since most of my photography would … Continue reading »
